Frequently Asked Questions

Unsure about how the Mummy MOT works? View our Frequently asked questions below or contact us on 07802517366.

Your initial Mummy MOT appointment will be an assessment of your current postnatal condition, as well as a discussion of your pregnancy history. The assessment will also involve a specialist women’s health physiotherapist completing visual examinations of certain areas of your body.

As a result, we recommend that you attend the appointment in clothing that is loose so that it can be pulled up to access certain areas of your body. However, if you do not feel comfortable in doing so, a sheet can be provided for your dignity, or you can simply choose not to have a particular area of your body assessed. It is completely your choice.

Once the assessment is completed, the information will be used to create a tailored recovery plan. This may include further postnatal physiotherapy treatments and strengthening exercises, but these will not take place until the second appointment. You will receive plenty of advice and education on the first assessment, leaving you feeling empowered knowing what the next steps are in your road to recovery.

As part of the Mummy MOT service, our specialist women’s health physiotherapists will use your assessment to create a tailored plan for your recovery. After the postnatal check-up, they will be able to identify the main areas of concern and delegate specific treatments to help aid your recovery.

For example, if your pelvic floor is weak (and not yet ready for higher impact activity), our specialist physiotherapists are trained in gynaecology and will use a variety of treatments from supervised pelvic floor exercises, to biofeedback training to magnetic therapy to help target your problem and return you to the exercise you love.

Alternatively, your Mummy MOT assessment may determine that your scar is tight, creating an overhang, causing you to feel stuck or restricted or reducing the movement in to your pelvic floor. As part of the tailored recovery plan, you will be provided with scar therapy and massage and given specific exercises and treatments to complete. This should help you to regain some strength and control in your scar and pelvic floor.

Our Mummy MOT service is suitable from 6 weeks after giving birth. However, if you are having problems in the early post-natal period and wish to be seen sooner than 6 weeks, you may wish to speak with your GP or consultant before booking an appointment with us. Alternatively, please call us to discuss your individual circumstance and our senior specialist physiotherapist will be happy to provide advice.

Our post-natal physiotherapy service can help various conditions including:

  • Diastasis recti (the tummy gap).
  • Postnatal pain in the pelvis.
  • Incontinence/ prolapse.
