Pessary Fitting

Post-natal

Pessary fittings for postnatal recovery, prolapse and incontinence

A pessary is a device that goes inside the vagina to help support the organs. It may be advised as part of your post-natal recovery or to address a mild to moderate prolapse of the uterus (womb), bladder and/or rectum. A pessary could also be considered to help with incontinence. A pessary is a conservative, low risk measure to help support the organs, help with post-natal recovery, support a prolapse and can enable you to continue chosen activities which may typically worsen by descent or having a prolapse.
A pessary is suitable for you if you are wishing to use one for post-natal recovery, incontinence or to support a mild to moderate prolapse. Descent of the organs or a prolapse and/or incontinence can be caused by childbirth, the accumulative effect of heavy lifting, having a chronic cough and/or straining on the toilet or alternatively due to the aging process. Symptoms you may experience are a feeling of heaviness or bulging around the vagina/ incontinence, frequency and/or the inability to evacuate the bowels effectively.
Pessaries
What to expect

What to Expect from your Pessary Fitting Appointment

There are several types of pessaries and during your consultation your women’s health physiotherapist will show you the options of which pessaries are appropriate for you. The pessary will be fitted on the day, it is not unusual to try more than one pessary before we get the correct size that suits.

After the first fitting, it is a requirement that you attend the clinic again in approx. 2 weeks’ time to have the pessary checked. If all is OK on that assessment, then you need to be routinely checked by our clinic every 6 months. Sometimes a different size or shape of pessary will have to be fitted, as things may improve or change over time.It may be necessary to wear the pessary all the time or a self-management approach can be adopted. On your initial assessment your women’s health physiotherapist will help determine what the best course of action for you will be.

Side effects of using a pessary under the correct instructions, with the correct follow up are very low. You will be shown how to remove the pessary if you are experiencing any problems. You may experience more vaginal discharge than normal. Vaginal irritation is another possible side effect. Women may need to use oestrogen cream (this should be prescribed by a GP and used for 2-4 weeks prior to attending the appointment).

If you have an offensive vaginal odour, copious amounts of discharge or unexplained pain or bleeding, you should immediately remove the pessary and contact your health care provider.

Once you choose your pessary, your clinic lead physiotherapist will size and fit you. The pessary is placed inside the vagina, this may feel a little uncomfortable but should not hurt. You will then be shown how to insert and remove yourself. You will then be asked to exercise and pass urine before you leave. If all is ok, we will see you in 2 weeks time for your pessary aftercare appointment.
Everyone’s anatomy and birthing history is different. There may be some pessaries that are not right for you, based upon your history. Some prolapses may also be too severe to support the pessaries we have in stock. If you are unsure whether a pessary is suitable for you, or want your prolapse or incontinence assessed prior to booking, you can see our clinic lead physiotherapist for a pelvic health assessment beforehand. Pessaries are not suitable for those who have had mesh in a previous pelvic surgery.

Must have check up after having a baby. New addition- I treated myself to a wonderful self-care routine by going weekly to pregnancy massage delivered skillfully by Charlotte and Caitriona. The massage helps with pregnancy related pain and discomfort as well as much needed relaxation

I can't recommend Bump to Beyond enough. The whole team are fantastic. They have created a clinic space full of compassion as well as being highly knowledgeable. I first visited for a Mummy MOT and I am now halfway through my treatment plan. Charlotte has been fantastic in listening to my concerns and making sure the treatment is right for me. It has made a real difference to my post natal recovery, both physically and psychologically. Charlotte and Deb have also given me hope of returning to my previously enjoyed activities.

I would highly recommend Bump and Beyond after having a slipped disc in 2020, I just couldn't get going again seeing lots of specialists on the way. I was recommended Debs by Bolton University and to be honest they have been amazing. I was diagnosed with a right sided tummy gap and after just 4 month's have managed through the bump and beyond platinum package to completely sort my tummy gap. I am still under Debs care and hope to graduate in the next few weeks, but will be keeping in touch to ensure things stay on track in the future. Thankyou to Debs and the whole team who are an absolute pleasure to work to chat and have a laugh with evrytime I go into clinic x Julie I have seen had breast cancer and been back to Bump to beyond June 2026 for scar therapy and would like to add this. I am a 52-year-old who has recently undergone treatment for breast cancer, including two surgeries within the past year—a lumpectomy with targeted node biopsy in August, followed by an axillary node clearance in September. I’ve been seeing Myer for support with scar management and improving movement in my shoulder and chest. Through massage and tailored daily exercises that she updates each week, the progress has been remarkable. After just three sessions, the appearance of my scar has significantly improved, and I’ve regained so much movement and sensation in the area under my arm. Not only have the physical results been fantastic, but the whole experience at the clinic has been incredibly positive. Myer is knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely caring, and I’ve really appreciated the friendly, relaxed atmosphere during each visit. I wouldn’t hesitate to highly recommend Myer and her services to anyone recovering from surgery.

Great experience with Mey and Charlotte. They diagnosed a tummy gap I hadn't realised I had and help me close it. I don't have the measurements to hand but after a few weeks of treatment plus exercises I regained my core strength and the gap is now closed. We also worked on the scar tissue and the area was feeling very tight but now it feels a lot better. The scar appearance has also improved. Thank you both!

I’ve just finished almost a year of rehab following a c section for my 2nd baby. It’s been such a great experience, from my initial pelvic floor rehab exercises to c section scar massage with Meyer, it’s been pivotal to my recovery. Special thanks to Meyer who has been amazing and provided so much information about my scar and how to continue supporting it long term! I would highly recommend!! Thank you again
